I started off reading Welcome to Cape Hill as it was recommended by a friend, and I thought it was fantastic. It has that classic MC romance/thriller vibe wherein the club gets betrayed by one of its own and heads are gonna roll. In comes Helen, bad ass female who doesn’t take shit even from Venom, prez of the Cape Hill Vipers. He’s intrigued even when he finds out she’s one of the enemy. It gets hot, dark and delicious then shit hits the fan and BAM! Cliffhanger. This one, I can’t wait to read what happens next.

Of course when I found out there were two more books that led up to Welcome to Cape Hill, I had to read those two.

Honestly, if I had read this book first, I would have just written off this series completely. Considering it’s my first read for this author too, I likely would have just called it quits. Welcome to Cape Hill, really saved it.

Firsts, had my hackles rising. There is a scene with a 16 year old (Leia) and a man in his thirties (Silas – who has been interested in her since she was 13). It’s not penetrative and entirely consensual but still. That’s a hard no for me. Leia is obsessed with Silas and continues to pursue him even when he becomes her step-father. I can get down with taboo relationships in dark romances but this one felt icky. Then Silas takes Leia’s virginity while she’s drunk on tequila, mourning her possible love for Braxton, her best friend and feeling conflicted because really she wants Silas but feels she can’t have him. Ugh. No. What made this a two star instead of a one star for me was the introduction of Braxton. I thought maybe, just maybe, he’d turn some of it around. By the end I didn’t really feel invested in the sequel but I read it anyway anyway because I needed to know how all of this led back to Venom and Helen…

In Lasts things heat up and the ancillary stories are cleared up a bit. There is a flash back however wherein Silas is caught with an ancillary character’s half-siblings (twins). He is having sex with both and then encourages them to fuck each other. I’m all for dark romances and taboo relationships… when it flows. Incest isn’t really my jam but I can overlook it if it flows organically into the storyline (ex: The Borgias). Here, it felt like the incest was added for shock value. Something to spice things up because the story was otherwise weakly constructed. We see some resolution toward the end with characters growing spines (finally) but again, I didn’t entirely feel invested and am confused whether there will be a part 3. Amazon says this is book 2 of 2 but the book says to be continued. Now that I know how the stories all tie in to the Cape Hill Vipers, I’m not sure I’ll read the last book if there is one.

Welcome to Cape Hill:

We all have a set of rules.
Protect the brotherhood.
Provide homage to the Vipers.
Keep Cape Hill safe from outsiders.
There’s only one problem: Los Desolados. They have other plans, deadly ones we don’t see it until it is too late.
Disaster comes in the form of love, that sword of decadence with a sharp tongue and a lithe body.
It comes in the form of Hell itself.

She’s forbidden.
Too young, too pure, and not mine.
I’ll break all the rules to be with her.
She belongs to me, even if she doesn’t know it yet.

He’s taboo.
Too old, too experienced, and my stepfather.
I’ll cross every line to be with him.
He’s not mine, and never will be.

It’s not about the danger of what’s forbidden,
it’s about the pleasure we get from it.

All consequences be damned.

Él es de otra.
He’s married. He’s forbidden, but I want him.
Knowing what can never be kills me.
No podemos desafiar al destino, estamos destinados el uno para el otro

Ella está con él.
Pero él no es digno de ese amor, y ella siempre será mi vida.
I’ll burn the entire world to the ground until she rights her wrongs.
This will end with us, and she knows it.

Welcome to Cape Hill:

C.L. Matthews lives in lala-landia with her husband and invisible friends. She wants to riot the lack thereof authentic Mexican food in her state, but she’s an introvert at heart. She enjoys tacos, Red Bull, and warm water, because she’s crazy. She’s an oddball, and realizes it’s been mentioned before, just go with it. Her joys in life consist of writing unconventional romances, making book covers, causing havoc to her reader’s hearts, and genre hopping when she needs a change of scenery. She’s a special kind of weird and enjoys every moment of it.
