The Quick and Dirty: Girl + magic blood + evil grandmother/queen intent on stealing her blood so she can be immortal and omnipotent.

Reunited with her mother, Maray and her family plan their return to Allinan to try to gain support from the court against Rhia, only they’re not sure who they can trust. A group of revolutionaries are intent on killing Maray before her evil grandmother is able to steal her magical blood and when they think they’ve finally resolved that problem, a surprise visitor resurfaces and foils their plans. We follow Maray as she not only confronts her foes but learns to control her magic and comes to the realization that she has more at stake than her life — there are those she loves, and the future of her people and her world.

Action packed nearly from the get-go and yet I felt this book was a little harder for me to get through, likely due to Maray’s inner monologue. I will be honest in saying that I was mildly annoyed with her. While I understand that this is a YA novel, I felt like Maray was immature. She thought only about her love interest and his kisses while forgetting about everything else — her duties, the rest of her family, her people. She only cared about saving him, thinking about how she’d miss looking into his eyes or kissing him, until near the end of the book. For example: “As she was still pondering whether she would ever get to kiss Jemin again …” or “– that she would never see Jemin again and be able to tell him how much she loved him.” In those moments I felt like shaking her and reminding her there was so much more at stake than just Jemin, his beautiful eyes and velvet kisses!

Overall a good read and I’m looking forward to finding out how the royal family resolves their most recent issue, but hopefully Maray matures a bit in between this book and the next!

The blood that holds the power to change the fate of Allinan is the same blood that will destroy her.

Even though Maray has returned to the world she grew up in, she isn’t safe. Grasping for power, Rhia seeks her blood to claim its magic. To prevent this, the rogue revolutionaries intend to kill Maray first.

This time, running isn’t an option. She must return to Allinan, where she belongs and where she has the best shots of learning to control her magic. But who can she trust when half of the court is loyal to her evil grandmother?

In this sequel to Two Worlds of Provenance Maray must accept that as a Princess of Allinan she has more to lose than just her own life.
