The Quick and Dirty: Another beautifully written, engrossing, soulful novel by Brittainy C. Cherry. Enemies-to-lovers. Hate, love, depression, heartbreak, healing.
Landon: Bad boy, playboy, hangs with party crowd. Uncle committed suicide on his birthday. His parents are neglectful. Hates Shay because she’s a goody-goody two shoes. Bet her he could get her to fall in love with him. Depressed but hides is under the guise of being a dick.
Shay: Miss sunshine, interacts with all social classes at her high school, writes screenplays. Father has been in an out of jail for drug dealing and usage. Her mother keeps taking him back and it causes all sorts of turmoil in her house. Hates Landon because he’s a jerk just to be a jerk. Bet him she could get him to fall in love with her.
When their bet forces them to interact, Landon and Shay realize their characterizations of one another are misconceptions. Shay’s life is not as perfect as Landon thinks, and Landon is not a jerk, but wearing a mask to keep people at a distance. As the two confide in each other, their hate turns into friendship, and their friendship turns into something deeper, more soulful, more potent. The last few months of their Senior year test their resolve to be together, with huge secrets revealed, foundations rocked and life-changing decisions made.
“It turned out everyone in the world had scars.”
Another Brittainy C. Cherry masterpiece. Landon and Shay are compelling characters, and their story is emotionally resonant, shattering readers’ hearts and rebuilding them in a way only Brittainy can deliver. I can’t wait to see how the rest of their story unfolds!
Some favorite lines:
“I’d learned early on that there aren’t any real villains in life, just heroes who have been beaten down for so long they forget they have the ability to be good.”
“When people cared about me, I felt a pressure to try to not let them down. Then, I always ended up letting them down.”
“People don’t like me when I’m sad.” “How do you know? You never let them close enough to see your tears.”
“I saw Shay. I saw the girl behind the mask, the one who felt so much and hid those feelings from the worlds because she felt they were too much of a burden to impose on others. I saw her cracks, and they were so beautiful that it almost made my frozen heart beat again.”
“Lead with your heart, but take your brain with you.”
“Loving Shay came as easy as the wind. It pushed through my system and left me completely breathless.”
“”Then tell me a lie,” he pleaded. “I hate you,” I breathed the words against his lips, and he swallowed them whole, as if they were the way to his existence.”
“We weren’t brought into this world to be perfect; we were brought here to be human. To live. To feel, To hurt. To love. To cry. To exist. And with that, comes a few broken parts. You don’t have to be perfect to love or to be loved. You just have to be brave enough to show the world your scars and call them beautiful.”
Shay Gable hated my guts, and I hated hers, too.
We went out of our way to avoid one another at all times. When she came my direction, I went the other. When we locked eyes, she’d turn and walk away.
All of that changed the day I was presented with a challenge. It started out as a stupid bet: make Shay fall in love with me before I fell in love with her first.
That was an easy bet for me to win.
I didn’t love, I hardly liked.
Yet slowly the game started to shift. Shay made me crave things I never knew I wanted.
The closer we grew, the more she challenged my darkness, and the parts I kept locked away.
The game between us became too real, our feelings intermixed, and the risks of hurting one another grew higher.
But you know what they say…
All’s fair in the game of love and war—especially the heartbreaks.

BRITTAINY C. CHERRY
Brittainy Cherry has been in love with words since the day she took her first breath. She graduated from Carroll University with a Bachelors Degree in Theatre Arts and a minor in Creative Writing. She loves to take part in writing screenplays, acting, and dancing–poorly of course. Coffee, chai tea, and wine are three things that she thinks every person should partake in! Brittainy lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her family. When she’s not running a million errands and crafting stories, she’s probably playing with her adorable pets.
