The Quick and Dirty: An forbidden age gap romance filled with drama, angst, and chemistry so hot it singes the pages! 🔥
This trope isn’t one that is new — father’s best friend battles himself because he’s tempted by the forbidden fruit that is his best friend’s daughter. Given the trope, we expect that there is going to be angst and there has to be some sort of drama to keep things interesting.
Inevitable has all of those things, but what makes it unique is the way Jenna tells her stories. The characters are well fleshed out and are given enough time to breathe and grow throughout the book. There is no info-dumping of what the characters motivations are; we learn them organically through the story, and by the time the inevitable 😉 happens, we truly feel like it *had* to happen; there was no other acceptable outcome. Sumner and Jonathan burn H-O-T 🔥. The chemistry was palpable between the two and I loved that Jenna didn’t have to “explain” that to us; you could feel the flames from the pages.
The angst and drama are plentiful in the book but not in a way that feels trite or overdone. It was just enough that in parts it felt almost like literary edging? (Is that a thing? It should be!) Being brought to the edge multiple times before resolution? Yep. That’s what happens, and it’s so good at the end. 😏
I think the thing that I love the most about the book beyond the dynamics between Sumner and Jonathan was the underlying message about happiness and success, and also about friendship (I have a sweet spot for Piper ☺️). The book was surprisingly uplifting and sweet in ways I hadn’t expected and I finished story the completely in love with this couple and the entire world of characters that Jenna has created with this series. Thanks for sharing your craft with us Jenna! Can’t wait for the next one!
**I was a Beta Reader for this book but provided this review voluntarily and am giving honest feedback. **
When my dad asked me to intern for his best friend, I knew I should’ve said no.
I had my own plans for the summer.
Ones that didn’t include revisiting my childhood crush.
Sleeping with the boss?
Probably not what my dad had in mind when he asked for my help.
But from the moment I step foot in the office, I can think of little else.
I still want Jonathan.
Am I willing to gamble my relationship with my dad and my heart?
Contemporary romance author, Jenna Hartley writes about strong, independent women and the men who dare to love them. Her characters aren’t perfect; they’re authentic. Her passion is to make their stories feel as real for readers as they do to her, infusing each one with sexy, sweet, and laughable moments that reflect real love.
When she’s not writing, Jenna spends her days chasing after a hilarious and imaginative toddler, as well as hunting down new allergy-friendly recipes for them to cook together. She lives in Texas with her family and loves nothing more than a good book, good chocolate, and Topo Chico.
